Matthew Lawrence trained at The Australian Ballet School. He then joined the Australian Ballet, rising to Principal Artist, before joining Birmingham Royal Ballet – as a Principal – in 2008, then Queensland Ballet in 2013. In Matthew’s illustrious 18 year career, he performed the leading roles in all the great classics, as well as works by modern choreographic luminaries such as; Bintley, Christie, Duato, Kylian and Wheeldon.
Last year, Matthew mentored (teaching/rehearsing) the Young Artists’, and staged ‘Four Square’ from David Bintley’s Take Five for the Dance Dialogues season. Within this season, he choreographed A Night Out for the Queensland Ballet. He has also created pieces for Birmingham Royal Ballet, Elmhurst School of Dance and Queensland Dance School of Excellence.
Now retired from dance, Matthew is a sessional lecturer at QUT, freelance teacher, choreographer and writer – currently as Dance Australia’s columnist.
